this is the truth from my heart

FACT: I have never made icons before.

FACT: There doesn't seem to be a lot of Moribito icons floating around out there.

FACT: This must be remedied!

So here's a small contribution to the sadly small fandom. Apologies for the poor quality.

i can has icons? )

she will defend you from all the darkness

Hey, you!  Yes, you!  Are you tired of anime with too much fanservice and not enough plot?  Annoyed by stories that have a plethora of superpowered musclemen, but no badass ladies?  Then you should definitely check out Seirei no Moribito if you haven't already.

Moribito stars Balsa the Spearwielder, a rurouni wandering warrior/bodyguard who has vowed to never take another life in order to atone for a past sin.  She is asked by the Second Empress to protect young prince Chagum, who is believed to be possessed by a water demon and thus marked for death by his father, the Mikado.

There are really no words to describe my love for this show, so I'll just let it speak for itself.

here's the original trailer )

You can watch all 26 episodes with English subtitles here.  (The English dub is actually pretty good, but they've only dubbed the first 10 episodes so far.)

and i want to start writing again

I am Vae Victis over at Dreamwidth.

Uh, because all the cool kids are doing it?

I changed my name because...well let's face it, my LJ name is lame.  I only chose it because the first fictional character I ever remember creating as a kid was Super Lazy Girl.   She went around inadvertently fighting crime and saving the day with as little effort as possible before taking a nap.

And I just picked this DW username because my middle name is Vae.  I knew I was named after my great-grandmother, but I never knew what it meant until I read some excerpts from Livy's History of Rome for one of my classes and came across "Vae Victis!" (woe to the vanquished).  So my middle name means woe in Latin.  OH FAMILY.

I have no Jet icon OH THE SHAME

SO.

A million years ago I wanted to make an AMV of Jet using the song "Another Perfect Catastrophe" by Firewater.  This was a good idea!  Except for the part where I was supposed to make the darn thing.  My technologically handicapped self failed miserably and the project has been on hiatus ever since.  Then the other day I was listening to my iPod and the song came up on shuffle so I said to myself "Self, it's not like you've got anything better to do with your time nowadays."  And so, for perhaps the first time in my life, I actually finished something I started.

Well, it's a pretty crappy AMV, but it is finished.  SURELY THIS IS A MIRACLE IN AND OF ITSELF.

books for sale

Depression has reared its ugly head again and it's taken what's left of my competence.  Unfortunately, I've withdrawn for this semester to salvage my overall GPA.  I also put in my two weeks notice, which perhaps made me a little happier than it should have.  Hopefully the antidepressants will kick in by the time fall semester rolls around.

ANYHOO I have several books that have been piling up over the years that I need to get rid of and I'll give you all first dibs.

a list! )

More may be added as I continue to organize everything.  Well, it's not so much organizing as getting as many books off the floor as possible so I don't kill myself tripping over them.

If you see anything you want just email me at thesuperlazygirl@yahoo.com.

I am secretly 112 years old

I don't want to turn into one of those adults that always complains about how good kids have it these days and how I had to walk in ten feet of snow up hill both ways and GET OFF MY LAWN, but canceling school because you don't want the kids to wait for the bus outside in the cold is a little much.  It's not even snowing!  I mean, it was cold enough this morning that my nipples could probably kill somebody (seven degrees!) but seriously?

Actually, tons of schools are telling kids to just stay home and play video games, because omg it's too much to put on a coat AND gloves.

When I was a kid they called off school early for snow, but the driver wouldn't let me on the bus because you had to go up a hill to get to my neighborhood.  So me and four other neighborhood kids just stood outside in the snow watching our bus leave us behind.  It builds character, dammit!

And now I am officially an old fart.

"change has come to America"

I'm sure you've all probably heard about the election results and I can't really express how I feel right now except to say this:

It's a great night for America.

"Drums make everyone feel like an Indian."

It's freezing outside, I'm recovering from a cold, and I have a French test tomorrow.  But none of that matters, because SHERMAN ALEXIE IS GOING TO BE ON THE COLBERT REPORT TONIGHT.

I...I don't know if my fangirl heart can take it.

omg
less than an hour to go

ETA:  So the combination was joygasmic and Sherman Alexie would like to inform you that unlike other groups of people, Indians vote for who's best for everyone and not just themselves.  XD

Also, War Without Balls = McCain's Campaign

"He mentioned me being wildly liberal...that's just me opposing George Bush's wrong headed policies"

Since I've already decided who I'm voting for, nothing has changed for me after the debate but this:

I'm totally going to insert "orgy of spending" into my everyday conversations.

Plan B

I was standing in line at a convenience store on campus today when I saw the newspaper rack and did a double take at the headlines.  According to The Tennessean NASHVILLE IS OUT OF GAS and the USA Today BAILOUT PLAN MEETS WITH CRITICS and dear God I can't look at the news anymore without wanting to just crawl into a corner in the fetal position and go on a whiskey diet.

That's when it hit me.  I had always assumed that working at a bank would be my fallback plan should the Librarian gig not work out, but now that banks are going under I need a new plan.  So I'm going to go into the mountains and make moonshine.

If my ancestors could do it, I can do it too.

What?  People drink more during times of economic strife, right?  And it's not like they'll be able to afford to get drunk on top shelf alcohol.  Hell, even if they don't drink it they can just put it in their car in lieu of gasoline.

okay, I lied, this is turning into a political blog

Is it just me or has the news about the Interior Department's sex, drugs, and oil scandal been vastly under-reported?  Because, you know, I would think that reports about the people in charge of giving oil companies contracts to drill on federal land (and off-shore) getting caught rigging contracts, accepting illegal gifts (like sex with oil representatives), and doing cocaine would come under more media scrutiny.

Which means one of two things:

1. The wind was knocked out of this story by Hurricane Ike and the election coming into it's final stretch OF CRAZY.

2.  We have become so jaded about government corruption and hypocrisy that reporting on it is like reporting on the sun rising.

At the very least, it gives a whole new meaning to DRILL BABY DRILL.

this isn't a political blog i swear

I wish I had posted on Obama's speech to even out this post, but I was on the coach with my roommate soaking it all in and couldn't really think of anything to say except sweet.  Of course, I'm biased on the matter.

This time I happen to be alone and on my computer.

liveblogging on McCain's acceptance speech )

I promise I'll shut about about politics.  It's just that nothing interesting is really going on in my life just blah blah I hate work blah blah procrastinating on my homework blah blah blah lost my French notebook.  Just two more months until the election is over and I think we can all be happy about that.

in which mccain picks a VP from a state younger than he is

Is it just me, or is anyone else scratching their heads over the VP picks of both nominees?

cut for ranting )

Thank God for Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert, because if they didn't poke fun at the madness of it all I'd go to bed pissed every night.  Their coverage of the Palin pick was HILARIOUS. <3

and here we go again

So, um, classes start Monday!  And usually I start out being excited about my classes, but this time I'm just really really nervous.  I love what I'm doing, I just don't know if I can do it all.  I might have to forfeit certain things.  Like sleep.  And sanity.

Oh well, it's not like I had much of the latter anyway.

Best of luck to everyone who's getting ready to start classes too!  :D

it was a bad day at work

Today, I had a revelation.

I am still too young and stupid to understand the world and my place in it.

But that's okay!  Because being young and stupid means I get to do reckless things, like possibly quitting my job when money is tight and new jobs are hard to come by.

So thanks Big Boss Lady at First Tennessee Bank for making it clear that I am so low on the totem pole I'm not even worth speaking to.  I asked a question and you made an excuse to hang up on me.  You returned the call to my supervisor to talk about tone and how the part-timer who just worked a forty hour week needs to be more of a teamplayer and I don't know what the fuck else because I'm not only not worth talking to, I'm not worth yelling at.  (Who the hell ever gets indirectly scolded?)

Oh well.  I can be treated like dirt in much classier places than that dump.

this is me being impressed

So I'm watching the Opening Ceremony for the Olympics in Beijing and HOLY SHIT IN HEAVEN

International Blog Against Racism Week

A big thanks to [info]redbrunja for telling me about this!

It's International Blog Against Racism Week and the theme is intersectionality, so there should be a lot of interesting posts to read. :D

It wasn't all that long ago when Clinton and Obama were still neck and neck and...well, the whole Geraldine Ferraro fiasco really didn't help anybody, although it did raise questions about racism within the women's movement.  So this week would be a great opportunity to explore that in greater depth.

Anyway, I encourage you all to participate!  And, uh, have a poem!

"Who Said It Was Simple"

There are so many roots to the tree of anger
that sometimes the branches shatter
before they bear.

Sitting in Nedicks
the women rally before they march
discussing the problematic girls
they hire to make them free.
An almost white counterman passes
a waiting brother to serve them first
and the ladies neither notice nor reject
the slighter pleasures of their slavery.

But I who am bound by my mirror
as well as my bed
see cause in color
as well as sex.

and sit here wondering
which me will survive
all these liberations.

- Audre Lorde (1970)

LOLCAT

My new laptop has arrived and it has a webcam!

This is Ralph, whom I am currently catsitting.  He looks sweet, but the cat has some serious emotional issues.  I always knew I'd become the Crazy Cat Lady, I just didn't know the "crazy" would refer to the cat instead of me. XD

Most Awesome Week in the History of Ever: Post #3

I am currently computerless as my old laptop is still dead, the new one has yet to arrive, and my roommate's has been returned. Have hijacked a computer at the library with my notes from the finale last night, most of which are illegible.

BECAUSE EPIC FINALE MAKES MY HANDWRITING GO ALSDKJSLDKJFS
